A low carb diet is one where the consumption of carbohydrates is reduced to a minimum. Some of the popular low carb diets which many people follow are the Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet, Sugar Busters, Protein Power, South Beach and the Atkins diet. Low carb dieting should not be confused with these diets that are an extreme in controlling carbohydrates and are actually a no carbohydrate diet.Â
Foods to avoid in Low carb dieting.
An easy way to know what to avoid when you are on a low carb diet is to avoid all white foods. This means sugar, white bread, white rice, pasta made of white flour and other white flour foods. These are foods that release sugar rapidly into the blood stream and then there is a sudden drop too in the sugar levels, causing hunger pangs and an intense need to eat something fast. So if you avoid these simple carbs and eat the complex ones that take time in getting digested and retain the sugar level for a longer time, you can sustain yourself and not have hunger pangs that damage your diet. Complex carbs are found in whole grain foods, like wheat bread or multi grained bread, cereals, and oats.Â
Effects of a low carb diet
The initial period of a low carb diet, usually the first day is the most difficult because the body has to get accustomed to this low carbohydrate consumption. However, if you stick it out for the first few days you will be able to go through with it. Once your body adjusts to the low carb intake it will change from a carbohydrate burning procedure to a fat burning one. Once this sets in you are on your way to loosing weight.Â
What should be your daily intake with low carb diets
Low carb dieting means staying away from carbohydrates that contain simple sugars. Avoid foods that contain sugar, flour, starch and simple carbs. Try and eat a diet that has more fats, some proteins and a low carb content in it. It is good to eat proteins that are derived from meats and nuts. This will sustain you and balance your sugar level for longer periods. Though you do not have to watch your calories try not to go overboard with too high a calorie content in your daily intake.Â
Some essentials while on a low carb diet
In order to get all the nutrients that your body requires you can take a good multivitamin pill, minerals and fiber supplements. Do not try sugar substitutes as these sometimes contain hidden carbohydrates. The best thing would be to read what is written on the packets when you buy foods so that you have an idea of what their contents are and avoid what you should not eat. You could get your self a booklet which gives details of foods that you should avoid and which have carbohydrates in them. This way you will not be mislead into eating the wrong things.
