Dieting plateau- get out of a weight loss plateau
January 12th, 2008
This is the most disheartening phase in any dieter’s life. They maintain their diet and are very careful with what they eat, but in spite of all this the weight just stays put at one particular point. This is the weight loss plateau or the dieting plateau. Once the dieter reached this, there has to be something more done to burn more calories and fat. This happens if you have not been consuming enough calories and the body feels there is a famine around and does its bit in maintaining a low metabolic rate.
Ways to get off this dieting plateau
You will only be able to loose weight if you do something to get out of this situation. You can increase your activity to increase your metabolic rate and start burning fat and calories once again. If you have been doing mild exercise for a certain amount of time you would have to try and increase the time of exercise and also be more brisk in the form of exercise you are doing. This will definitely show results and you will see the weight slipping off you once again.Â
Change your food habits
To get off this dieting plateau, you may have to change your food habits and the diet you have been following until now. Include more food in your daily intake which will burn more fat and reduce your weight. Eat more negative calorie foods so that more calories are burnt than what these foods contain and thus create a negative calorie intake. Eat vegetables like cucumbers, cabbage, celery, lettuce, bell peppers, tomatoes and the likes which will help you to shed more weight.
Sometimes adding proteins in place of carbs to your food may do the trick and once again accelerate the weight loss procedure and get you off the dieting plateau. Ensure that you may have cut out fats from your diet but on the other hand may be consuming more calories through the carbohydrates that you are eating.
If you have been on a certain weight loss program for a few weeks this may cause stagnation and it might help to change to a different program for a while.Â
Other health related issues that cause a dieting plateau
Sometimes there is a biochemical or physiological reason why you are not loosing weight and have reached a dieting plateau. Your body may be starved of essential nutrients and this is the cause of the weight plateau. Other reasons for not loosing weight even after being on a very strict diet regime could be a hormonal imbalance, a malfunctioning thyroid or a blood sugar and insulin imbalance.
Whatever the reason be, once you have diagnosed the problem you can find a solution for it. This may at times require a little more research than you bargained for and you may need professional medical assistance to get to the problem. It is always better to see what could be wrong with our physical condition instead of ignoring the fact.
